May 9 2012

Neptune Theater  Seattle WA

by Steve Kennedy- Williams, reader submitted.

We've long known that Steve Kennedy-Williams is an extremely passionate music fan.  He is a fixture at shows in Seattle, and his recordings have likely been heard by thousands of folks who are into the live music taping scene.  But we challenged him, don't just sit behind the scenes and document the music, which he does so well.  Spend some time, think about it, tell us about your experience.  The result is this inciteful review, thanks Steve!

Terrapin Crossroads

Submitted by Rick Winfield

Our intrepid West coast reviewer, Rick Winfield forgot his credit card at Terrpin Crossroads when he was reviewing the Phil Lesh Quintet show.  His loss is our gain, as he stopped by to get it a week later and caught an impromptu trio show with Phil Lesh, Mark Karan (Ratdog, Jemimah Puddleduck) and Ross James at Phil Lesh's new Grateful Mecca.  We've also attached some video from March with Phil Lesh and Friends at the soft opening of said venue featuring Mark Karan.

With two of the more popular up and coming bands out of Northampton readying new releases, it only made sense to have the two bands play together at the Iron Horse on April 20th.  The late show that night pulled crowds for both bands, though they were a bit different from each other, reflecting the different musical styles the two groups employ.

Van Martin, well known to New England reggae fans as the former lead guitarist of Spiritual Rez, now has a hard core funk band under his own name.  This band draws on all of the musical prowess of a man whose guitar skills stand tall, and his friends in the scene are many.  Some of them drop by from time to time at shows, including Zach Deputy, who dropped in on this show to sit in with Van and his band.

Rustic Overtones

December 31 2010

Port City Music Hall

Portland, ME

When I was younger, New Year’’s Eve was a big holiday- a night that you celebrate as best you can by seeing the coolest concert you could find, no matter where it was on the continent.  1990 and 1991 I went to the Oakland Coliseum and saw The Dead with Branford Marsalis the first year, then the Dead with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (featuring Kevin Eubanks) the second year.  1993 I ventured to Worcester MA and saw Phish at the Centrum.  The year in between?  I was super bummed, went to some parties, and vowed that I would find a great concert the next year to attend.  The years that followed saw me playing in my own band on some New Year’’s eves, running other shows, and eventually settling into family life.  Live shows were harder to make to on this night of nights.

ARTIST REVIEW:

Miracle Orchestra

Reunion Shows in Boston and NYC.

Drummer Bill Carbone reflects on his time in Miracle Orchestra and their recent reunion shows in Boston and NYC.  As a band that in the late 90s and early parts of this century helped to define the current generation of jambands not only in the East, but nationally, Miracle Orchestra was an important cog in the whole live music wheel.  Frequenting haunts like the Middle East in Boston and the Wetlands in NYC helped to propel them into the national jam consciousness.  Their recent reunion caught a few jam fans off guard, for sure.
