And they kept on dancin...
...Into 2012 with The Zen Tricksters. In full Zen Trickster fashion, the pioneer Jam Band led by Jeff Mattson, added yet another year to it's three decade "long, strange trip" on Sunday 1/22 at Brooklyn Bowl. Fans were not let down!

The band’s appearance included five original songs from their three studio albums as well as the Grateful Dead tunes people expect at their shows. This night featured a five man line up including ZT keyboardist Rob Barraco, who had been out of the Tricksters fold in the recent decade, though would drop by for some limited appearances now and again. The band very much considers him an honorary Trickster for life. Along with lead guitarist Jeff Mattson, Barraco is in the band Dark Star Orchestra, and has done his time in Phil Lesh and Friends.
They were also joined by Jaik Miller (Xanax-25), who performed Orange Sunshine from a self titled album and stayed on to sing a powerful version of Jerryu Garcia’s Deal. His appearance was spirited by the events theme, a memorial tribute to the late Dave Nolan (Wetlands Music Archivist and DJ). The event which has now occured three consecutive years is put on by Bob O Donnel from WBAI FM radio and has proven to be one of few Zen Tricksters annual appearances.
Zen Tricksters afficianados are familiar with the long breaks between the bands appearances. They are also very aware and follow very closely, the transitions the band sustains. Back in 1999, when Barraco left the Trickster and joined up with Lesh in a lineup that is now known as The Quintet, The Tricksters quickly re-vamped and played into the 21st century. After hyphenating the Tricksters brand with Grateful Dead Singer Donna Jean Godcheux, Jeff Mattson also joined DSO, late 2000's, replacing John Kadlicek (Furthur).
Through it all, the Zen Tricksters kept it alive sustaining original band members Klyph Black, Dave Diamond and Tom Circosta. The core rythym section continue to play individually and also together in an intense side project, The Jam Stampede. Also mentionable are some extended family with a kind of permanent attachment to the band's legacy. Musicians such as Jason Crosby and Joe Chirco, for example, are among those re-occuring at various times.
Even though their shows are far and few between, it's always special for Zen Tricksters fans and the band as well, as was represented by the smiles all around the Brooklyn Bowl. Check out the Setlist at: http://www.zentricksters.com Who knows when these guys will be getting together again, probably next year for the 4th Dave Nolan tribute night. Until then, check out all of the band members in their various projects, and Keep on Truckin.
